General Liability Insurance

General liability is what responds when a customer slips, your work damages someone's property, or a job turns into a dispute. It's the first policy most NC businesses buy and the one clients and landlords ask to see — the line between a routine accident and a bill you pay yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does general liability cover employee injuries?

No, general liability insurance does not cover employee injuries. You need workers' compensation insurance for that.

What's the difference between general and professional liability?

General liability covers third-party bodily injury and property damage. Professional liability covers negligence and errors in your professional services.

How much general liability insurance do I need?

Most small businesses start with a $1 million per-occurrence limit and a $2 million aggregate (written as $1M/$2M). The per-occurrence limit caps what the policy pays for a single claim; the aggregate caps the total for the policy year. Higher-risk trades — or contracts that name a client as an additional insured — often require $2 million per occurrence or a $5 million aggregate. The right number depends on your industry, the size of the jobs you take on, and what your clients, landlords, or licensing boards require in writing. We help NC businesses match limits to those real obligations instead of guessing.

What does a $1 million / $2 million aggregate policy mean?

It is two separate caps. The $1 million is the most the policy pays for any one covered claim (per occurrence). The $2 million aggregate is the most it pays in total across every claim during the policy term. If a run of claims uses up the aggregate, coverage is exhausted until renewal — which is why higher-exposure businesses raise the aggregate or add a commercial umbrella policy.
